Maine House votes to downsize

The Maine House of Representatives granted initial approval yesterday to a bill that would reduce its size by 20 members.

The measure would amend the state Constitution to downsize the House from 151 to 131 members and add about 1,600 constituents to each district, according to a press release from the Maine House Democrats. The bill is expected to save taxpayers $750,000 a year.

The State and Local Government Committee initially voted down the bill, but the House approved it with an amendment by Rep. David Van Wie (D-New Gloucester). The legislation was adopted by unanimous consent after a motion to vote it down failed 23-122. As amended, the bill would not change the size of the 35-member state Senate, the release states. If approved, it would go before voters in a statewide referendum.
