Cruise ship spending for 2011 was up $9 million in Maine, according to an industry report released last week.
The study, issued by the Cruise Lines International Association, showed that the industry spent $45 million directly in Maine in 2011, over 2010's spending figure of $36 million.
The industry report also found that 795 jobs were supported by cruise ship traffic in 2011, up from a figure of 690 calculated in 2010.
Those jobs and traffic come from spending of passengers and crew in the ports where stops are made, like Bar Harbor, where 106 ships stopped in 2011 and 114 cruise ships are expected to stop this year, according to the Bangor Daily News.
Portland is the state's second busiest destination for cruise ships, with 59 ships scheduled for stops both last year and this year.
Nationally, the report estimated that the cruise ship industry contributed more than $40 billion to the U.S. economy in 2011.
