Maine joins other states in offshore wind consortium

Gov. John Baldacci and nine other East Coast state leaders have formed a consortium to promote the development of offshore wind power.

The initiative by the governors and U.S. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar established the Atlantic Offshore Wind Energy Consortium, which will coordinate and streamline the development and siting of offshore wind projects on the coast, according to a press release from the governor's office. A regional renewable energy office has been established to promote offshore wind projects along the Atlantic Coast, according to the Associated Press. Salazar in April approved the nation's first offshore wind farm off Cape Cod after a decade of debate.

The other states participating are New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina.
