Maine lags in consumer spending growth

Consumer spending in Maine increased 3.5% from 2013 to 2014, higher than the previous annual increase but still below the national and New England average.

The report released Tuesday by the federal Bureau of Economic Analysis measured how much households in every state and across the nation spent on goods and services. It was the BEA’s first state-by-state review of personal consumption expenditures

Overall, Mainers spent $54.7 billion in 2014, compared with $52.9 billion in 2013. Across all states, expenditures increased 4.2% in 2014, higher than the 3.1% growth in 2013.

The category Maine households spent the most on in 2014 was health care, at  $7,289 per person, followed by housing and utilities, at $6,360.

The Portland Press Herald created an interactive chart to show how spending on different categories have changed over the years.
