Maine Mall owner rethinks shopping center

The owner of the Maine Mall in South Portland is revising its plans for a new shopping center across the street from the state's largest mall.

Chicago-based General Growth Properties in May 2006 received approval from the city for a 55,000-square-foot, high-end shopping center on an empty lot across the street from the Maine Mall, one of the last undeveloped properties in the area. GGP is now revising those plans because its proposed anchor tenant, Best Buy, did not want to relocate from the Maine Mall to the new lot, according to Steve Puleo, South Portland's city planner.

GGP officials met with the city Nov. 15 to discuss the new plan, which calls for an unnamed national bookstore chain, restaurants and a bank, Puleo said. The development would cost roughly $6.5 million, Puleo said.
