Maine Maritime hosts inaugural STEM Conference for Girls

The Maine Maritime Academy is Castine hosted nearly four-dozen girls from nine local high schools for the first ever “STEM Conference for Girls” on May 21.

The students engaged in hands-on engineering and marine science laboratory experiences at the post-secondary college.

The event, which was co-hosted by the American Association of University Women of Maine, which also held its annual state convention at the maritime academy over the weekend, gave participants the chance to speak with leaders of the nonprofit and its mission to advance equality for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy and research.

“Our goal in hosting the conference is to pique the interest of the girls in all of the opportunities available to them should they choose a STEM education,” Elizabeth True, MMA vice president for student affairs and enrollment management, said in a statement. “Many students do not realize the variety of careers they can pursue with an engineering, science or technology degree.”
