Maine Med receives final approval for new parking garage
Maine Medical Center on Tuesday received final approval from the Portland Planning Board to build a new parking garage at 222 St. John St., part of the hospital’s planned $525 million expansion.
Construction will begin this fall on the garage, which will contain 2,450 parking spots for medical center staff and should be complete by the end of 2019, according to a Maine Med news release.
The hospital originally proposed siting the parking structure next to an existing staff garage at Congress and Gilman streets. But feedback from neighbors and the city led Maine Med to find a new location and increase the planned size of the garage, raising the $512 million budget for the expansion project by $13 million.
The new garage will offer 24-hour security, charging stations for electric vehicles, and shuttle-bus service to the hospital’s main entrance on Bramhall Street.
The current staff garage will be eventually be demolished to make way for a proposed tower containing 64 patient rooms and 19 rooms for cardiac procedures. The medical center expects to file a site plan application for that building within the next month, according to the release.
The tower represents the third and final phase of the expansion. The first phase includes the construction of 64 oncology patient rooms in the hospital’s East Tower and the addition of 225 parking spots to the patient and visitor parking garage, completed earlier this week.
Maine Med is the state’s largest hospital, licensed for 637 beds and employing nearly 8,700 people.
