Maine Medical Center earned the highest rating for its hospital quality and safety in an analysis by the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
With a rating of five stars, Maine Med is among 337 of the 3,692 hospitals surveyed nationwide to receive CMS's top rating. It was one of only 25 teaching hospitals in the United States to earn a five-star rating.
“This five-star rating is the result of our focused commitment to building an overall culture of patient-centeredness and safety,” Maine Med President and CEO Richard Petersen said in a press release Monday. “This work reflects the total efforts of our entire organization — from front line care teams to the staff most patients will never see but who truly make a difference. We all play a role in providing safe and high-quality care, and I’m extremely proud of the recognition our entire team has deservedly earned.”
Maine Med is the state’s largest medical center, with 637 beds and 8,700 employees.
The star rating comprises 57 CMS measures in seven categories. The analysis by the federal government, known broadly as Hospital Compare, has become an important resource for patients, consumers and other quality rating systems such as Leapfrog.
The U.S. Centers for Medicare AMD Medicaid Services is part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
