Maine Medical Center said it expects to start site work on a new clinical services building in Scarborough this fall after getting a green light this week from the town Planning Board.
Monday night's unanimous vote clears the way for a $59 million Maine Medical Partners building at Maine Med's Route 1 campus, as part of its overall expansion and modernization project.
SMRT Architects and Engineers, of Portland, is the architect on the Scarborough development, while Consigli Construction is the builder, according to a Maine Medical Center spokesman.
Completion is expected in 2021.
The 108,000-square-foot, three-story building will house practices including neurology; neurosurgery and spine; ear, nose and throat; rehabilitation medicine and vascular surgery.
Existing facilities on the campus include a surgery center, cardiology, women's health, outpatient imaging and the Maine Children's Cancer Program.
Maine Med said the new building will allow the practices concerned to expand and grow, including the potential creation of new programs, in response to patient demand.
It will house exam rooms, procedure rooms and doctors' offices and will include the addition of 500 new parking spaces.
“This investment in Scarborough will ensure our colleagues have the most modern and professional facilities in which to offer the world-class care they provide to patients,” said Joel Botler, Maine Medical Center's chief medical officer and president of Maine Medical Partners, in a statement.
“It furthers our strategy of providing critical services where our patients live and work, and will help us realize our mission of working together so our communities are the healthiest in America," he added.
Maine Medical Center unveiled the plan for the new building in March.
Jeff Sanders, president of Maine Medical Center, called the development an important milestone for Maine Medical Center and Maine Medical Partners.
“With this new medical building," he said, "we continue to develop the Scarborough campus into a regional center for specialty medical care that is convenient for our patients, with easy highway access, ample parking and state-of-the-art facilities."
That project will now move ahead amid ongoing construction at Maine Medical Center's Bramhall Campus in Portland slated for completion in 2022.
Construction is currently underway of two patient care floors with 64 new oncology patient rooms on top of the hospital’s East Tower, set to be complete later this year, and a new staff parking garage on St. John Street set to open in January.
Three levels have already been added to the garage, creating 225 additional parking spaces.
