Maine No. 3 in maple syrup production
Maine fell 1,000 gallons short of nudging New York state out of the No. 2 spot among the nation’s largest producers of maple syrup, with Vermont easily holding on to the top spot with 1.32 million gallons produced in 2014.
New York produced 546,000 gallons while Maine produced 545,000 gallons, according to this year’s tally compiled by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Last year, Vermont produced 1.48 million gallons, New York 574,000 gallons and Maine 560,000 gallons, the USDA reported.
Nationally, maple syrup production in 2014 totaled 3.17 million gallons, down 10% from 2013. All states, with the exception of Pennsylvania, showed a decrease in production due to cold temperatures contributing to a shorter season of sap flow compared to 2013.
The USDA said the value of maple syrup production nationwide in 2013 was $132 million — up 77% from the previous season — did not report the economic value of this year’s maple syrup production.
