Access to health care and lots of open spaces make Maine an attractive destination for people retiring from the military, according to a study released this week that puts the Pine Tree State among the top 15 states for military retirees.
The rankings, by MyPerfectMortgage.com, places Maine at No. 14 on the list, which is led by West Virginia (No. 1), Alaska (No. 2) and Mississippi (No. 2). Along with Massachusetts (No. 11), Maine was the only other New England state on the list. (Scroll down for the full list of 15 ranked in order.)

Researchers studied various vital parts of retired military life, such as Department of Veterans Affairs expenditures per veteran, the number of veterans, the state's overall health care rating, the density of military bases and home prices. The findings were based on a study of more than 9,200 pieces of data relating to post-military life.
"We hope that our list of top states for ex-military is not only interesting but can be used by our nation's heroes to find the best place to live after separating from service," said Tim Lucas, senior editor at MyPerfectMortgage.com. "These men and women truly deserve a great resource based on deep research and an impeccable methodology."
In terms of numbers, Maine has 17 veteran health care facilities, two military bases and 27 veterans per 1,000 residents, the report shows.
"Planting roots in Maine means you'll have access to some of the best health care around, including several of the highest-rates hospitals in the country," MyPerfectMortgage.com contributor Ana Chevalier notes in her write-up. In addition, the fact that Maine has one of the lowest population densities means there are lots of quiet, open spaces around the state for people to explore and enjoy.
She goes on to say that "Maine’s low population, slower pace and superior health care can be an ideal match for military retirees dealing with anxiety, PTSD, or other mood disorders. And Mainers are some of the nicest people you’ll ever meet."
In order of rankings, here's how the top states lined up:
