Maine sees net job growth

Despite an increasing unemployment rate, Maine posted about 700 new jobs between May 2007 and May 2008, according to statistics from the Maine Department of Labor.

John Dorrer, director of the Center for Workforce Research and Information, told Capitol News Service that despite the addition of new jobs, thousands of positions have been lost over the same period. Health-care jobs were up about 1,000, and administrative support jobs increased by about 900. Leisure and hospitality added about 400 jobs, and the arts, entertainment, recreation and retail categories added about 200 jobs each, the news service reported.

The biggest losers were the construction industry, which lost about 1,000 jobs; manufacturing, which decreased by about 700 jobs; and the financial industry, which cut about 400 jobs.
