Maine's unemployment rate in May was 4.7%, the same as the previous month and 1% less than it was a year ago.
The Maine Department of Labor reported on Friday that an estimated 32,200 people were unemployed last month, 7,800 fewer than a year ago.
The national unemployment rate in May was 5.5%, a slight increase from the previous month and a decrease from 6.3% one year ago.
Maine's unemployment rate remained under the average of 4.9% for the New England states. The state’s unemployment rate was lower than Rhode Island (5.9%) and Connecticut (6%), and higher than Massachusetts (4.6%), New Hampshire (3.8%) and Vermont (3.6%).
Maine's employment-to-population percentage was 60.3% in May, the 92nd consecutive month the state has been above the national average of 59.4%.
The state's preliminary estimate for nonfarm payroll jobs in May was 609,900, an increase of 5,000 from one year ago. The largest increase in jobs came from the professional and business services, finance, health care and hospitality sectors. Government jobs saw a decrease.
