Three retail giants will have a smaller presence in Maine in the coming months.
Macy’s will close its Bangor operation as part of a larger plan to close 63 stores this spring, the Bangor Daily News reported.
The Bangor store opened in 1998 and has 65 employees, according to a company statement. The retailer plans to focus on online sales and more profitable stores.
“Bangor has taken some big hits recently,” Milford resident Jesse Shaw told the BDN.
Kmart announced last week that its store at 688 Hogan Road near the Bangor Mall would close in April.
On Thursday, Sears Holdings Corp. said it plans to close a total of 150 locations of Sears and Kmart, including the Bangor Kmart and its Augusta Sears location, at 10 Whitten Road. It also announced plans Thursday to sell its Craftsman division to Stanley Black & Decker, for $900 million. The moves are aimed at improving the company’s bottom line.
Other Bangor Mall retailers that closed in recent years include Ruby Tuesday’s, New York & Co., the Hallmark Store and Gap.
After the closure of the Bangor Macy’s, there will be just one Macy’s store in Maine, at the Maine Mall in South Portland.
Sears will have remaining stores in Bangor, Brunswick and South Portland.
Kmart will have remaining stores in Auburn, Augusta, Madawaska and Waterville.
