Maineiacs might be heading to Canada

After a six-year run, the Maineiacs hockey team seems poised to leave Lewiston and its Androscoggin Bank Colisee home.

Canadian sports network RDS and other sources are reporting that the team is the leading candidate to occupy a new arena under construction in Boisbriand, a suburb of Montreal, according to the Sun Journal in Lewiston. The Maineiacs, a franchise within the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, was touted as a cornerstone of Lewiston's redevelopment efforts when it first arrived in 2003.

But tickets sales never reached expected levels. Matt McKnight, Maineiacs' president and governor, declined to comment on the reports, citing confidentiality. He did confirm Saturday that the team has not filed a request for relocation with the QMJHL, which it would have to do by Jan. 31 if it planned to move, the paper reported.
