Mainers say no to taxes, casino

In a historic election that swept an African-American, first-term senator into this country's highest office, American voters embraced change. Here in Maine, a mix of old and new greeted voters, who turned out in record numbers yesterday.

Among the results:

• Sen. Susan Collins will head to her third term in the U.S. Senate, defeating Rep. Tom Allen.

• Rep. Mike Michaud will return to his seat representing Maine's 2nd congressional district, defeating Professor John Frary.

• Chellie Pingree has defeated Republican Charlie Summers for what had been Tom Allen's seat in Maine's 1st congressional district. Read more at PolitickerME.com

• Statewide voters said "no" to a new tax on beer, wine and soda to fund the flagging state-sponsored health insurance program, Dirigo, leaving backers of the health plan with few options for new funds. Read more at PolitickerME.com

• Statewide voters said "no" to a proposed casino in Oxford County, according to preliminary results. Read more at PolitickerME.com

• Statewide voters approved the third referendum question on the statewide ballot, which was to authorize a $3.4 million bond for drinking water programs and to construct wastewater treatment facilities.

• In the Maine Legislature, Democrats picked up a few extra seats in the Senate, maintaining their majority. Read more at PolitickerME.com

• In Wells, voters gave thumbs up to a six-month ban on large-scale water extraction, a response to Poland Spring's intent to explore possibilities there.

• In Scarborough, results from a referendum to allow slot machines at Scarborough Downs are delayed because of voting machine problems. The results are scheduled to be announced at noon, according to the Portland Press Herald.

• In Camden, voters rejected a citizen initiative that would have prohibited Wayfarer Marine from erecting condominiums on its waterfront parcel. Read more at VillageSoup.com

• In Biddeford, voters rejected a proposal to close the city's airport.
