Maine's fisheries landing value was second in nation in 2014

Maine’s commercial marine fisheries are the second-most lucrative nationwide for the first time, surpassing Massachusetts with the help of a bump in the value of lobster.

The Bangor Daily News reported that an annual report released Thursday by the National Marine Fisheries Service showed that the dockside value of Maine’s fisheries landings last year was $548 million, up from $474 million in 2013.

The BDN reported that a 23% increase in the national average price for lobsters helped Maine jump ahead of Massachusetts for the first time since 1999. In that year, Maine was ranked third behind behind Alaska and Louisiana.

Fishermen in Alaska, which has long led the country in value of landings, caught $1.71 billion worth of marine species in 2014.
