Avesta Housing on Monday unveiled 28 new affordable apartments for seniors in downtown South Berwick.
The Portland-based affordable housing organization said the apartment development at 29 Young St. was the result of a collaborative process between the town and Avesta Housing to turn an underutilized piece of downtown land into a community asset.
The residents of Young Street Apartments will also receive health care services from York Hospital as part of a new partnership between the hospital and the housing organization.
Dana Totman, president of Avesta Housing, said in a release that the completion of the project comes at a critical time for the approximately 30 people who will live there, but more needs to be done for the “thousands of seniors who still need affordable housing.”
Requests for Avesta Housing’s apartments have jumped by more 25% in the past year and by more than 45% among senior households, the organization said.
Maine Speaker of the House Mark Eves, who represents the district in which Young Street Apartments is located, sponsored legislation to put a senior affordable housing bond on Tuesday’s statewide ballot.
Question 2 would help finance the construction of new homes and repairs for hundreds of Maine seniors through a $15 million general obligation bond issue.
“Young Street Apartments are the perfect model for senior housing across the state,” Eves said in a statement. “They address a strong need in the community to help seniors remain independent in their communities, with health care centers and shopping areas nearby. If voters approve the housing bond tomorrow, it will be a huge win for seniors and our local communities.”
