Maine's jobless rate drops to lowest point since 2001

In its newest report, the Maine Department of Labor said that the jobless rate in the state is at its lowest level since February 2001, as it dropped to 3.4% in March, compared to the 4.6% reported at the same time last year.

The dip in the jobless rate comes from an estimated drop in Maine’s labor force, although since January, the estimated number of people employed has risen while the labor force has remained largely unchanged.

Nationally, the jobless rate rose from 4.9% to 5%, a lower rate than the 5.5% reported last year. Regionally, Maine’s jobless rate for March was higher than both Vermont and New Hampshire, which reported 3.3% and 2.6%, respectively.

Correction: A previous version of this story incorrectly stated that there was a 4.6% decrease in the jobless rate over the year. The 4.6% was the jobless rate from March 2015.
