Maine's jobless rate hits 8.3%

Maine's May unemployment rate was 8.3%, up from 7.9% in April and 5.1% in May 2008, according to the Maine Department of Labor.

Maine experienced a net loss of 1,200 seasonally-adjusted nonfarm wage and salary jobs between April and May. Between May 2008 and May 2009, the number of seasonally-adjusted nonfarm wage and salary jobs fell 21,600. Job losses were registered in manufacturing; trade, transportation and utilities; construction; leisure and hospitality services; government; financial activities; professional and business services; information; and other services. Job gains were recorded in health care and social assistance.

New Hampshire and Massachusetts reported seasonally-adjusted unemployment rates for May of 6.5% and 8.2%, respectively. The national unemployment rate was 9.4% in May, up from 8.9% in April and 5.5% in May 2008.
