Manufacturing workers eligible for aid

Laid-off manufacturing workers in Brunswick and Freeport are now eligible for federal job placement assistance, according to a press release from Rep. Chellie Pingree's office.

Workers let go from Brunswick's Cooper Wiring Devices after production work shifted to Mexico, as well as employees laid off from L.L.Bean in Freeport when the company began importing pet accessories instead of making them, can apply for aid through the U.S. Department of Labor's Trade Adjustment Assistance program. The program provides employment services and job training to workers displaced because of foreign competition. Cooper Wiring closed in September, putting 76 out of work, and in April L.L.Bean laid off about 200 workers, according to The Forecaster.

The amount of aid available to workers was unclear, but in total, Maine workers are eligible for $3.5 million in aid this year, according to the release.
