A developer proposing an LNG terminal in Down East Maine has submitted its formal application with federal regulators.
Calais LNG last month filed its application with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission for an $800 million-$1 billion liquefied natural gas terminal and pipeline on the St. Croix River in Calais, according to the Bangor Daily News. The company has been working on its application since 2007, and filed its pre-application with FERC last year, Art Gelber, development director for Calais LNG, told the paper. The 330-acre site would feature two 160,000-cubic-meter LNG storage tanks, a pier and 20.5-mile pipeline. The project is estimated to be completed in 2014, creating 50 to 80 full-time jobs, as well as up to 1,000 temporary jobs during the construction process.
The proposal is one of three in the area. Downeast LNG has already begun its FERC review process for its LNG terminal in Robbinston, and expects to win final approval this year, Founder Dean Girdis told Mainebiz. Another developer, Quoddy Bay LNG, has proposed a terminal at Pleasant Point but in 2008 withdrew its state and federal applications pending further research.
