Fast-food chain McDonald's Corp. yesterday hosted a National Hiring Day to add 50,000 workers to its ranks, including 500 in Maine.
Officials from the restaurant chain appeared at locations in Ellsworth and Augusta to publicize its efforts to add new employees to its 61 restaurants in Maine, according to The Associated Press. Company officials said the one-day hiring spree was meant to help the more than 13 million Americans currently out of work, while industry officials said it was a way for the company to promote itself as a good employer. Sonja Twombley of D&L Management, which runs the Ellsworth McDonald's, estimated the restaurant would get 50 job applications by the end of the day Tuesday to fill six to eight positions.
The company usually hires about 50,000 people in advance of the summer season, but this is the first time it's organized a national one-day hiring event. McDonald's said it and its franchisees will spend more than $518 million in additional wages and salaries in the next year, as well as $41.5 million to train new workers, according to a press release.
