MDI lab plans $4.5M expansion

The Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory will construct a $4.5 million wing that will add nearly 7,000 square feet of research space to its Salisbury Cove campus in Bar Harbor.
The Mount Desert Islander reported the proposed "Marshall Wing" will allow the laboratory to hire 12 new research staffers, which will increase its work force to 60 employees. Construction estimates put the cost of the new building at $352 per square foot, for a total of $3.4 million. Another $1.1 million is planned for fees, services, furnishings and the administrative costs of the move.
The Bar Harbor Planning Board is scheduled to review the plans on Wednesday, according to the paper.
