The University of Maine System's board of trustees yesterday confirmed former Unity College president William Hess as the new president of the University of Maine at Fort Kent.
President of Unity for 10 years, Hess previously held various teaching and administrative positions at College of the Marshall Islands in the Pacific Ocean, according to the Bangor Daily News. But after serving his term, Hess resigned from Unity to serve as executive director of Audubon Expedition Institute in Belfast. Hess was chosen over other finalists Philip Conroy Jr. of Mount Ida College and John LaBrie of Northeastern University.
Hess hopes to help UMFK "achieve its vision, especially as it relates to rigorous liberal arts education, experiential learning, the natural environment, sustainability, and community engagement," he said in a statement. Hess will begin his new position on July 19 and receive a salary of $137,000, succeeding Richard Cost, UMFK's former president of seven years.
