ME legislators call for state aid

Maine's legislative leaders have joined a national call for more state aid from Congress.

Senate President Elizabeth Mitchell (D-Vassalboro) and Speaker of the House Hannah Pingree (D-North Haven) signed a letter to congressional leaders asking for any stimulus package to include money to help states handle cumulative budget shortfalls of $100 billion, according to the Capital Weekly. The letter was also signed by 35 other legislative officers from around the country.

The legislators are asking for money in several key areas, including infrastructure and Medicaid, and are calling for a law requiring online retailers to pay state sales tax. Some of the support asked for has already been pledged by Congress, but has thus far been an unfunded mandate, like the 40% the federal government is supposed to contribute to special education, the paper reported.
