Colby eliminates loans for Mainers

A sizeable donation from a Portland couple will allow some Maine students to graduate from Colby College debt free.

The Waterville college yesterday announced that, starting in the fall of 2008, it will eliminate loans from its financial aid packages to qualified Maine applicants needing aid, replacing them with grants, according to a press release.

Portland business owner and philanthropist Joseph F. Boulos and his wife, Sheri, provided the lead gift for the initiative. Boulos, a 1968 Colby graduate and chair of Colby's board of trustees, is chairman and owner of CB Richard Ellis/The Boulos Co. in Portland. The amount of the Boulos' gift was not disclosed.

Colby's tuition and room and board for the 2007-2008 academic year is $46,100, according to the college's website.
