ME to launch cutting edge healthcare network

Maine will launch its innovative statewide health network, linking 15 hospitals, three health clinics and the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention, at the end of July.

HealthInfoNet will allow medical providers to access a continually updated stream of patient information, which proponents say will improve care and lower healthcare costs, as well as keep track of infectious outbreaks like Lyme diseases and swine flu, the Bangor Daily News reported. Only Delaware has a similar statewide network, but it is limited to lab data only, the paper reported.

Health information for more than 400,000 voluntary patients in Maine has already been loaded into the HealthInfoNet system. The network is being paid for with $1.7 million from the state's General Fund, as well as with some federal funding promised by the Obama administration for statewide medical networks, contracts with participating providers and grants from the Maine Health Access Foundation, the paper reported.
