Members picked for economic commission

Gov. Paul LePage's administration has overhauled the state's economic forecasting commission, eliminating longtime member Charles Colgan.

LePage, along with legislative leaders, replaced all five of the Consensus Economic Forecasting Commission's members, according to the Sun Journal. Colgan, a professor of public policy and management at the University of Southern Maine's Muskie School of Public Service, has been part of the commission since it was formed in the 1990s and recently served as its chairman, but said he wasn't surprised that the administration did not ask him to return.

Among the new members are J. Scott Moody, chief economist for the Maine Heritage Policy Center, and chairman Jim Clair, who has worked as a nonpartisan State House staff member for 17 years and previously worked on the Revenue Forecasting Committee. He told the paper the commission's priorities include evaluating the state's fiscal policies and analyzing the state of the economy. Four of the five commission members are appointed by the governor, with recommendations from the Senate president and speaker of the House. The fifth is appointed by the other commission members, according to the paper.
