Memorial Bridge funding secured

The U.S. Department of Transportation has allocated $20 million to the replacement of the Memorial Bridge, funding previously in jeopardy due to budget cuts.

Last month, lawmakers in the U.S. House of Representatives voted to eliminate several economic recovery grants, including the TIGER II grant slated for the Memorial Bridge between Maine and New Hampshire. But members of the congressional delegations in both states have been working to guarantee obligation of those funds through expedited release, according to a press release from U.S. Sens. Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe. "I am grateful the U.S. Department of Transportation fulfilled its commitment to the Memorial Bridge project in a timely fashion and that completion of this bridge overhaul was not jeopardized by ongoing budget debates in Washington," Sen. Snowe said in the release.

Work on the $90 million project is currently set to begin in the summer of 2012.
