Mercy Hospital is planning to close its addiction recovery center in Westbrook — a move that will result in 45 job cuts and a consolidation of services at its State Street facility in Portland.
The Bangor Daily News reported that 250 patients at the Westbrook center will still receive care, but it will stop taking referrals for outpatient addiction treatment. Scott Rusk, Mercy’s vice president and chief medical officer, said Mercy wanted to keep it open as a statewide resource, but the hospital couldn’t afford to subsidize the program anymore.
Rusk said Mercy is trying to help find new positions within Eastern Maine Healthcare System, the hospital’s parent company, for the 45 employees who will lose their jobs. Another 45 employees at Westbrook’s facility will be moved to the State Street location by July.
