METRO Breez stop in Brunswick to expand work/shopping commuter rides

If the Brunswick Town Council agrees to an extension of the METRO Breez bus service to Brunswick, it will likely benefit Brunswick riders who commute to Portland and Freeport to work and shop.
That’s according to The Forecaster, which also reported earlier that the Greater Portland Transit District launched the three-year Breez program in June. It currently provides service from Portland to Freeport, with stops in Falmouth and Yarmouth.
At the time, Brunswick councilors declined to participate because of the program’s cost. But expanded federal grant funding has reduced the cost of extending the service.
In October, Greg Jordan, general manager of Greater Portland Metro Transit, told Mainebiz that the service was on its track to meet ridership goals.
Jordan said the service frees up parking spaces, reduces traffic congestion, and has the potential to ease a problem employers often cite as a contributor to chronic labor shortages — through consistent and affordable transportation for workers.
The Brunswick council is expected to take action at its next scheduled meeting on Dec. 19. If approved, the service could launch in Brunswick next June, The Forecaster reported.
