Century-old iconic midcoast restaurant closes
The Lobster Pound Restaurant in Lincolnville started in the early 1920s with 60 seats and ended last month due to bankruptcy.
Over the decades, the eatery had subsequent renovations, expansions, as well as a flood and fire, the Bangor Daily News reported.
In the end, the eatery was unable to overcome mounting operational costs in recent years — particularly mandated flood insurance, which climbed to $10,000 per year and showed no signs of leveling out, owner Dick McLaughlin told the BDN.
A project two years ago to open a brewpub on the premises with Lincolnville’s Andrews Brewing Co. in an effort to boost business wasn’t enough to save the restaurant. The 25-year-old Andrews Brewing remains open at 353 High St. in Lincolnville.
