File Photo / Tim Greenway Bath Iron Works will get $59.4 million from the U.S. Navy in a modified contract.

Bath Iron Works said the U.S. Navy has awarded it a contract modification worth $59,417,202.

The funding will be used for engineering and technical assistance for new construction DDG 51 Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyers.

“This contract modification will allow them to continue to make important improvements to those ships,” U.S. Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King said in a joint statement.

The funding will go towards continuing Lead Yard services, which include liaison for follow ship construction, general class services, class logistic services, class design agent services, continuation of the DDG 51 Class Flight III upgrade design effort, and class change design services for follow ships.

More than 200 highly skilled engineers, designers and planners work on this contract, according to BIW. Since 1987, Bath Iron Works has provided design and technical assistance for design upgrades and major changes for DDG 51-class destroyers.

Collins is a member of the Senate Defense Appropriations Subcommittee and King is a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee.
