A $6.2 million renovation of the former Parkview Adventist Hospital that began three years ago when it was acquired by Mid Coast Hospital has been completed with the addition of wellness and cancer care centers.
The total 44,000-square-foot renovation of the former hospital at 329 Maine St. was celebrated with a ribbon-cutting Wednesday.
Mid Coast bought the assets of Parkview Adventist Medical Center in 2015. Renovations included making the hospital a “patient-centered medical home” primary care practice, wellness education center and comprehensive cancer care center, as well as house administrative space.
The most recent phase, which began in 2016, completed the wellness and cancer care centers. Landry/French Construction of Scarborough was the building contractor and SMRT of Portland designed the interior spaces.
“It has been three years since the integration of Mid Coast Health Services and Parkview Adventist Medical Center and we are here today to officially celebrate the reopening of the Mid Coast Hospital Parkview Campus,” said Sandy Morrell Rooney, Mid Coast–Parkview Health board chairman, at the ribbon-cutting.
Rooney said the new state-of-the-art spaces focus on “prevention and wellness as the foundations of overall health” and already are helping the hospital’s patients and local residents “become healthier.”
The 9,000 square foot wellness center — named after Frank, Anne and Frank Crooker Jr. — was paid for through debt financing and a $1 million donation from the Crookers of Harpswell. Programs offered by the center focus on cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation, medical exercise, weight loss, stress reduction and tobacco cessation, according to a news release from Mid Coast.
New initiatives include medical exercise for cancer, stroke, and other chronic diseases, as well as cooking classes in its teaching kitchen.
The cancer center, part of the MaineHealth Cancer Care Network, offers care in affiliation with MaineHealth and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston and includes more than 300 providers in Maine and New Hampshire’s Mount Washington valley.
Morrell Rooney, of Brunswick, and her husband, Chuck Rooney, donated $500,000 toward the center.
The center is anchored by the Cancer and Blood Disorders three-provider medical oncology practice of Mid Coast Medical Group. It allows patients access to cancer-related services in one space, including medical oncology, infusion, laboratory and medical exercise.
A cancer resource center, affiliated with the American Cancer Society, is also available.
When 93-bed Mid Coast Hospital was approved by U.S. Bankruptcy Court in August 2015 to acquire Parkview for approximately $7.87 million, one of the requirements was to invest $3 million over three years into the Parkview campus. Parkview had filed for bankruptcy earlier that year and the planned merger with Mid Coast was part of the filing.
Lois Skillings, president and CEO of Mid Coast–Parkview Health, said Wednesdsay that since the merger, both hospitals “focused on creating a coordinated system of care to ensure this community has continued access to exceptional health care close to home. As promised, we are stronger as one.”
Mid Coast–Parkview Health has more than 200 providers on its active medical staff, practicing in more than 30 primary care and specialty areas, Skillings said.
The first phase of the renovation, Mid Coast Medical Group–Family Practice, opened last year in 10,000 square feet and has eight physicians and more than 20 support staff.
The practice was built to accommodate delivery of preventive and chronic disease care, as well as integrated behavioral health counseling, the release said. The model of adult care practice, patient-centered medical home, “is proven to improve patient outcomes and lower costs of health care.”
At the Wednesday event, recognition was also given to Teresa and Peter Fogg of Wiscasset, who helped expand Mid Coast Hospital’s Healing Environment Project to the Parkview Campus through curated art and interior recommendations.
According to the hospital’s website, Mid Coast-Parkview Health, which has 2,000 employees, is the largest employer in Brunswick and third-largest in the region.
