Mills steps down from SBA helm

Karen Mills, head of the U.S. Small Business Administration and Maine resident, will step down in May from the post she took on in 2009.

In a statement issued Monday morning, President Barack Obama praised Mills' four-year tenure.

"Karen has made it easier for small businesses to interact with the federal government by reducing paperwork and cutting through red tape," Obama said.

Mills, a venture capitalist and graduate of Harvard Business School, runs the private equity firm MMP Group in Brunswick, where she lives with her husband, Barry Mills, president of Bowdoin College.

The Bowdoin Orient reported that Mills sent her resignation letter to colleagues this morning and the Washington Post reported rumors of her pending departure earlier today.

Further information about the reasons for Mills' departure from the office were not immediately available.

In February of 2009, prior to her confirmation for the job, Mills spoke with Mainebiz about her goals for small business growth in the U.S.
