Money magazine picks South Portland as best place to live in Maine

Money magazine cites Bug Light lighthouse in its write-up of South Portland, included in its latest “This is the Best Place to Live in Every State” list.
Citing South Portland’s bustling food and bar scene and thriving economy, Money magazine named it the best place to live in Maine.
It won top honors in the publication’s “This Is the Best Place to Live in Every State” list, which included spots with populations between 10,000 and 100,000.
“While the choice of where you live is a personal one,” note the authors, “this ranking aims to highlight notable cities — maybe even your own — all across the country.”
In its write-up on South Portland, the periodical notes that it was never actually a part of its big-city neighbor and doesn’t need to depend on Portland to flourish.
“But Maine’s ‘most invisible city,’ as some residents call it, has a bustling food and bar scene and a thriving economy of its own, with an affordable cost of living relative to the rest of the country,” says the blurb.
It adds that two lighthouses — Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse and Bug Light — “provide fantastic views of the city of the harbor,” and highlights Willard Beach and the Greenbelt Walk as places where residents can head on a nice day.
It lists the median household income as $56,472 and median home listing price at $355,800 in the 25,799-population city.
