National coop open to Maine milk farmers

Maine organic dairy farmers struggling to stay afloat after being let go by HP Hood earlier this year have a shot at regaining some of that business through a national cooperative.

The CROPP Cooperative, which represents more than 1,300 farmers in 32 states and Canada, will take over management of Stonyfield's fluid milk brand from Hood on Jan. 1, according to Maine Public Broadcasting Network. It has invited 15 organic dairy farmers in Maine to join the farmer-owned cooperative, which already has 28 members in the state, and resume supplying the brand. CROPP already supplies organic milk for other Stonyfield products including yogurt. Under the new arrangement, Hood will stay on as Stonyfield's fluid milk processor, MPBN reported.

Just one month ago, other Maine dairy farmers dropped by Hood started a new venture, called Maine's Own Organic, or MOO, to market their organic milk directly to local consumers.
