Maine National Guard officials on Saturday officially opened the $14.5 million Aviation Readiness Center in Bangor.
The 53,000-square-foot center, completed at the end of the summer, will be the base for about 180 soldiers, according to the Maine Public Broadcasting Network.
U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, who advocated for funding the facility and attended Saturday’s ribbon-cutting ceremony, said the new center will enhance the professionalism of the Maine Army National Guard.
“Just as important, it is an investment that confirms the high regard, respect and gratitude America has for the men and women who carry out difficult and dangerous missions on our behalf,” said Collins, a Republican from Maine. “The conflicts of the 21st century and the evolution of our armed forces during that time have underscored one essential truth: given the proper resources, the training and equipment, the Army National Guard can meet any challenge and carry out any mission, whether here at home or overseas.”
Nathan Arnold, commander of the 126th Aviation Regiment, told MPBN that the newness of the building is unusual within the guard system as a whole. Most buildings were built in the late 1940s and early 1950s, he said.
