NBT Bank has hired a leader who got his start at an early age, watching his mom work as a part-time teller at a local community bank on the west side of Chicago.
John A. Rhodes, who will join the bank as vice president and commercial banking relationship manager, told Mainebiz that while watching his mom at work, he saw "how important a local banker can be for a community."
Rhodes joins NBT Bank with more than 10 years of experience in commercial banking and customer relationship management. He has worked at institutions in New York and throughout New England.
"After starting my professional career in IT, I transitioned to IT business-relationship management," said Rhodes. "From there, I was able to pursue banking for both retail and small business customers in Chicago, and that gave me the opportunity to move into business banking and ultimately into commercial banking."
Prior to joining the NBT, he was with Camden National Bank, working in Portland.
"Once I had an opportunity of seeing just how embedded the great institutions were within their local communities, I was able to develop long-lasting relationships and it allowed me to relocate to Maine when the opportunity arose to continue my commercial banking career here," said Rhodes.
In his community, Rhodes volunteers with Junior Achievement, Kaboom, Classroom Central and Melvina Masterminds.
In his new role, Rhodes is responsible for building and maintaining customer relationships across the state.
He is based at NBT Bank’s Maine regional headquarters, at 5 Widgery Wharf in Portland.
NBT Bancorp (Nasdaq: NBTB), which is based in Norwich, N.Y., had $11.89 billion in assets as of Dec. 31, 2024.
