An Augusta-based medical nonprofit has received nearly $1 million in federal grant money to establish a regional telehealth resource center.
Beginning this month, Medical Care Development Inc. will receive $325,000 a year for three years from the Office for the Advancement of Telehealth at the U.S. Health Resources and Service Administration, according to a press release. The organization will establish the NorthEast Telehealth Resource Center, which will use technology like videoconferencing and electronic transmissions to deliver health care across the six New England states and New York. The center will provide technical assistance and hold educational activities such as regional conferences, and help the states establish their own telehealth-use forums modeled on Maine's existing Telehealth Collaborative. Medical Care Development is partnering with the Fletcher Allen Health Care Telemedicine Program at the University of Vermont College of Medicine on the project.
Telehealth programs help provide health care access to rural communities and connect residents with specialty providers, according to the release.
