Starting Oct. 1, Maine motorists will be able to buy a specialty license plate benefitting The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital at Maine Medical Center. Monday also marked the 10-year anniversary of the initial release of the Maine Breast Cancer Support specialty plate, which has raised more than $3 million to combat breast cancer in Maine.
The new Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital specialty plate, unveiled at a ceremony in Portland on Friday, is available at the Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles branch offices and at select town offices in Maine.
The plate costs $20 and the annual renewal fee is $15. From every plate sold and from every renewal $10 will go directly to the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital.
Community donations are the sole source of funding for the Angel Ambulance Program at the hospital. The ambulances transport more than 250 babies and children each year to Maine’s only children’s hospital so that they can receive a higher quality of care.
“The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital specialty license plate is the culmination of years of work from thousands of Mainers who have provided their support, their advocacy and their signatures,” Rich Peterson, president and CEO of Maine Medical Center, said in a news release.
Families of former patients were among the plate’s biggest advocates and spoke at a legislative hearing about the impact the hospital has had on their lives.
The Westrich family, whose daughter, Madison, spent time at the hospital when she was 2, took part in Friday’s event, along with hospital leaders, lawmakers, Gov. Paul R. LePage and Maine Secretary of State Matt Dunlap.
“I cannot express the feeling of comfort my family and I have experienced with the medical treatment and care from the staff at The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital. They have become like family to us,” said Kim Westrich. “A license place for The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital is an investment in our children and our children’s children here in Maine.”
With more than 100,000 patient visits a year, Maine’s only certified children’s hospital provides services in treatment, cardiology, neonatal care and numerous other pediatric specialties. It was designed with children in mind with state-of-the-art hospital equipment, specialty programs and large play areas.
The Maine Secretary of State also put out a news release commemorating the 10th anniversary of the Maine Breast Cancer Support specialty license plate in honor of October as “Breast Cancer Awareness Month.”
The proceeds from the Breast Cancer Support Services specialty plate raises money to be deposited into the Breast Cancer Services Special Program Fund, established by the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention. The Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention will then equally distribute the funds to three different organizations:
The breast and cervical health program within the CDC.
