A group of nearly 40 lobstermen has launched a new Portland company that will sell prepared lobster foods online and in supermarkets.
The 38 lobstermen behind Calendar Islands Maine Lobster Co. have partnered with York-based Stonewall Kitchen to develop a line of eight lobster dishes, including stews, pot pies and macaroni and cheese, that will be sold through an online store launched last week, as well as Hannaford Bros. Co. stores soon, according to the Portland Press Herald. The group formed out of another cooperative, Dropping Springs LLC, formed eight years ago to help lobstermen pool resources to combat rising fuel prices. The recession and falling lobster prices propelled that company to instead sell value-added products.
The group, which operates from the Portland Fish Pier, is planning to debut its products next month at the Boston International Seafood Show, according to the paper.
