New Maine trade group seeks North Atlantic commerce

Icelandic officials will be in Maine today to discuss trade opportunities through the North Atlantic and mark the formation of a new Maine-based trade effort.

The Maine International Trade Center announced today that it has formed the Maine North Atlantic Development Office to focus on trade-related issues and opportunities. It is an effort to make Maine a distribution hub for Icelandic and Northern European goods to the United States.

The effort is in partnership with the state’s Department of Economic and Community Development. In a press release, MITC announced that Icelandic Ambassador Gudmundur Stefansson and Hlynur Gudjonsson, an Icelandic trade representative, will be in Portland today for a business roundtable and press event about the new trade initiative.

The announcement comes just after Gov. Paul LePage echoed points made by Icelandic President Olafur Ragnar Grimsson in May that global warming will open new international shipping routes, according to the Portland Press Herald.
