Two entrepreneurs who recently bought the former Saunders Bros. mill in Oxford County plan to turn it into "the rolling pin capital of New England."
Louise Jonaitis and Steve LaFreniere, who bought the 26.6-acre property in the Greenwood village of Locke Mills at an auction in July, told the Sun Journal they plan to have some of the mill's machinery back online by the end of this summer and hire back some of the 55 workers who lost their jobs when the mill closed in May. The pair, who formed a company called Greenwood Park Lands to purchase the property, plans to produce seven different rolling pins and open a direct retail outlet in Freeport. The company will operate as Saunders Bros. at Locke Mills with the slogan "Let's get Maine rolling."
LaFreniere, owner of Eastbrook Timber Corp. in West Enfield, bought the former dowel mill -- which was valued at $1.36 million by Greenwood officials -- at an auction for $450,000. LaFreniere has recently bought other mills and also owns facilities in the Bangor and Houlton areas.
