NewPage recalls laid-off workers

About 100 workers laid off last year from the NewPage Corp. mill in Rumford are expected to be back on the job by the end of this week.

NewPage spokesperson Janet Hall said the workers, laid off last September when the mill shut down its No. 10 paper machine, will be back to work by Friday, according to the Sun Journal. Hall did not specify how many workers would be returning, but Matt Bean, president of Local 900, said it would be about 100. NewPage is also planning to restart its No. 10 machine by mid-month, according to Hall. The mill employs between 850 and 900 people.

Hall declined to say whether the move signaled an improving market or future growth at the mill. "This is more of NewPage balancing production with the needs of customers," she told the paper.
