Newspaper offers buyouts

Executives at the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram on Monday offered voluntary buyouts to employees as part of an attempt to cut 35 jobs at the paper. The elective package is available to employees who agree to leave their jobs next month.

The buyout comes nearly two weeks after the newspaper announced its intention to eliminate dozens of jobs to offset increases in newsprint and energy costs as well as declining advertising revenue. Both voluntary and involuntary layoffs will be effective July 1.
