Newspaper trims staff, paper

The Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram has announced plans to lay off 15 employees and eliminate 27 positions in all. The paper will also reduce the percentage of paper devoted to news and photographs and cut back on "supplemental" wire news services.

Publisher Charles C. Cochrane was quoted as saying advertising is down "from the weak results posted last year," the Press Herald reported, and "considerably below budget" for this year.

The lost jobs will be both part- and full-time positions and affect almost every newspaper department, including the paper's online service MaineToday. No reporters will lose their jobs.
