As part of its ongoing commitment to provide the public with information about its proposed salmon farm in Belfast, Nordic Aquafarms will host a panel discussion on aquaculture and its place in the Maine seafood industry.
The panel will be June 12, at 6 p.m., at the University of Maine Hutchinson Center in Belfast. Entitled “Land-based Aquaculture and the Future of Maine’s Sustainable Seafood Industry,” the program will feature a panel of experts on aquaculture and Maine fisheries.
Nordic Aquafarms CEO Erik Heim will be present to give a brief update on the company's Belfast project.
Based in Norway and one of the largest international developers of land-based aquaculture, Nordic Aquafarms announced in January its plans to invest $150 million in the first phase of a multi-year development to create a land-based salmon farm in Belfast.
Next Tuesday’s discussion will be moderated by Des FitzGerald, the founder of Ducktrap River of Maine and former board chair of the Natural Resources Council of Maine. FitzGerald is currently entrepreneur-in-residence at the Maine Venture Fund and a member of Focus Maine’s aquaculture implementation team.
Other panelists include:
“Maine has a long and proud heritage for providing quality seafood to the world, and Nordic Aquafarms looks forward to becoming part of that tradition,” said company CEO Erik Heim. “We are pleased to have been able to assemble this impressive panel of experts, each of whom will contribute to what I know will be a lively and informative discussion.”
Heim said that he will give a brief update on the Nordic Aquafarms project and show a new video before the panel begins its discussion. Panelists will address questions posed by the moderator as well from the audience.
This is the third in a series of public information meetings hosted by Nordic Aquafarms and the City of Belfast since Nordic announced it plans for a land-based salmon farm in January.

The company is developing sustainable fish farming practices for the future to deliver super fresh high-quality seafood to regional markets, with a low environmental impact. In January, it announced plans for land-based salmon farm in Belfast to be built in several phases. Phase 1, with a capacity of some 13,000 tons, is currently being designed in Norway. Construction is expected to start in 2019, with operations commencing in 2020. The facility will provide high quality, super fresh Atlantic salmon to the regional market.
About land-based salmon production
Land-based production is a rapidly emerging method for sustainable production of salmon. It is based on indoor production in large tanks and water treatment systems, and its benefits include: the ability to recycle and treat water on site to reduce overall water consumption, recycling of waste resources, the prevention of sea lice and parasites, the elimination of fish escape into the sea and co-mingling with wild species, the application of renewable energy concepts, and a shorter distance to market for a high-quality, fresh product, reducing the carbon footprint of air and land transport.
