Northern health clinics win $5M

Three health clinics in Bangor and northern Maine are set to expand, thanks to a more than $5 million grant from the federal Department of Health and Human Services.

Penobscot Community Health Center in Bangor is receiving $2.1 million to build an 8,000-square-foot building that will house administrative space, offices for case workers and patient waiting areas, according to a press release from U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud. Katahdin Valley Health Center, based in Patten, will renovate its Millinocket Health Center and construct an 8,464-square-foot addition to add dental space and exam offices, among other services. Katahdin Valley Health Center will also renovate 1,670 square feet of its Houlton facility to add dental clinic space.

The funding comes from the Affordable Care Act passed earlier this year, and was part of the first of a series of awards to be given to community health centers, according to the release.
